Planting trees at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center

Eighty-three 5th graders from Sugar Grove Elementary School attended the Indiana Division of Reclamation Earth Day Celebration on Friday, April 20, 2007.  They planted nearly 100 sweet gum, 100 bald cypress and 100 pin oak trees at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Indiana.  The Sports Center is located on land that used to be an abandoned coal mine site, Victory Mine.  Employees from the Office of Surface Mining, Indianapolis Area Office also attended to help plant trees.  This was an all day event with several different stations so the children could get a hands on feel for coal mining and issues relating with disturbing the land and reclaiming it.
