Presentation at Wanamaker Elementary School
March 5, 2002
Wanamaker
Elementary School is located in southeast Indianapolis and teaches
Kindergarten through 5th grades. This school is over 100 miles from coal
producing counties in Indiana. Mike Kalagian and Vicki Preston of the
Office of Surface Mining, Indianapolis Area Office, made coal
presentations to the 4th grade classes on March 5, 2002.
This is Mr.
Schnepp’s class of 24 students.
Students are
viewing a short video, “Coal: The Inside Story” provided by
American Electric Power from Columbus, Ohio. The age appropriate video
uses a puppet narrator to explain coal formation, mining, and uses.
This is Mrs.
Alexander’s class of 19 students.
Mrs.
Alexander also used one of the charts to further explain the many uses of
coal beyond electrical production.
During the presentation of overheads and slides, students
had a chance to handle pieces of coal.
This is Mrs. Fulton’s class of 27
students.
Students are looking at lignite from a
Texas mine and bituminous coal samples donated by Solar Sources Inc., an
Indiana coal producer. Vicki Preston handled questions raised by the
students.
This is Mrs.
Titzer’s class of 23 students.
Mike
Kalagian answers questions about coal and coal mining during his
